What Is a Clear Aligner?
A clear aligner is a transparent, custom-made orthodontic appliance used to gradually move teeth into better alignment. Unlike traditional metal braces, clear aligners are removable and nearly invisible.
How Clear Aligners Work (Step-by-Step)
1. Consultation & Digital Scan
Your dentist:
Examines your teeth and bite
Takes digital 3D scans (no messy impressions)
Creates a computerized treatment plan showing how your teeth will move over time
You can often preview your “future smile” before starting.
2. Custom Aligner Fabrication
A series of clear plastic trays are made specifically for your teeth
Each tray is slightly different
Each new aligner moves your teeth a small amount (usually 0.25–0.3 mm per stage)
3. Wearing the Aligners
Wear 20–22 hours per day
Remove only for eating, drinking (except water), brushing, and flossing
Switch to a new set every 1–2 weeks
Each aligner continues the gradual movement process.
What Problems Clear Aligners Can Treat
Clear aligners can correct:
Crowded teeth
Gaps between teeth
Overbite
Underbite
Crossbite
Open bite
Mild to moderate crooked teeth
For very severe cases, traditional braces may still be recommended.
How Teeth Actually Move
Teeth move because of controlled pressure:
The aligner applies gentle force to specific teeth
Bone around the tooth reshapes
The tooth shifts into its new position
Over time, this creates proper alignment
This process is biological and gradual — that’s why treatment usually takes 6 to 24 months, depending on complexity.
Advantages of Clear Aligners
✅ Nearly invisible
✅ Removable (eat whatever you want)
✅ Easier brushing and flossing
✅ More comfortable (no wires or brackets)
✅ Fewer emergency dental visits
Disadvantages
❌ Must be worn consistently
❌ Can be lost or cracked
❌ Not ideal for very complex bite problems
❌ May cause temporary speech changes (minor lisp at first)
❌ Can be similar in cost to braces
Cost
Costs vary by country and case complexity, but generally:
Mild cases: lower cost
Complex cases: higher cost
Often comparable to braces.
Important: Retainers After Treatment
After finishing aligners, you must wear retainers:
Prevent teeth from shifting back
Often worn nightly long-term
Without retainers, teeth can relapse.
